The Luxury of Food and Shelter

I worked every week of college. I had an apartment to pay for, a dog to feed, and women I was trying to impress. I couldn’t afford to do all of the things I wanted to if I didn’t work at least 24 hours a week, possibly more, regardless of how it impacted my studies.

Still, there was no way to afford my life’s “luxuries” (if you consider a place to live a luxury) so I still racked up quite a bit of school loan debt. In fact, I took an extra 1000 each quarter that did not go to loans or books because I needed to make sure I had something in the bank in case anything went south in my job. Rent in my area rivals 500 a month with a roommate, so it is not as though I was rolling in cash thanks to my job. That 1000 each quarter worked as a debt solution, in a way, because I did not need to take out any extra credit or any additional loans to pay back credit cards. It wasn’t a great plan, mind you, but at least it got the job done. Once I finish college, all I will owe are school loans, so that’s something. And then, when I consolidate student loans, it should be smooth sailing.
